When you go out to war against your enemies and see horses, chariots, and an army larger than yours, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you.2En dit sal gebeur wanneer julle naby die oorlog kom, dan moet die priester nader kom en met die volk praat. When you are about to go into battle, the priest is to come forward and address the army,3en vir hulle sê: “Hoor, Israel, julle nader vandag die oorlog teen julle vyande. Laat julle hart nie week word nie; moenie vrees nie en moenie verskrik word nie en moenie voor hulle beef nie,וְאָמַ֤ר אֲלֵהֶם֙ שְׁמַ֣ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אַתֶּ֨ם קְרֵבִ֥ים הַיּ֛וֹם לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עַל־אֹיְבֵיכֶ֑ם אַל־יֵרַ֣ךְ לְבַבְכֶ֗ם אַל־תִּֽירְא֧וּ וְאַֽל־תַּחְפְּז֛וּ וְאַל־תַּֽעַרְצ֖וּ מִפְּנֵיהֶֽם׃saying to them, “Hear, O Israel, today you are going into battle with your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not be alarmed or terrified because of them.4Want die HERE julle God is Hy wat met julle gaan om vir julle te stry teen julle vyande, om julle te red.” For the LORD your God goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.”5En die opsieners moet met die volk praat en sê: “Wie is die man wat 'n nuwe huis gebou het en dit nie ingewy het nie? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man dedicate it.6En wie is die man wat 'n wingerd geplant het en dit nie in gebruik geneem het nie? When you approach a city to fight against it, you are to make an offer of peace.11En dit sal gebeur as sy jou met vrede antwoord en vir jou oopmaak, dan moet die hele volk wat daarin gevind word vir jou dwangarbeiders wees en jou dien.aLetterlik: tot dwangarbeid. If they accept your offer of peace and open their gates, all the people there will become forced laborers to serve you.12Maar as sy nie vrede met jou maak nie en oorlog met jou voer, dan moet jy haar beleër. But if they refuse to make peace with you and wage war against you, lay siege to that city.13En die HERE jou God sal dit in jou hand gee, en jy moet al sy manspersone met die skerpte van die swaard verslaan.aLetterlik: na die mond van die swaard. When the LORD your God has delivered it into your hand, you must put every male to the sword.14Net die vroue en die kinders en die vee en alles wat in die stad is, al sy buit, mag jy vir jou buitmaak, en jy mag die buit van jou vyande eet wat die HERE jou God vir jou gegee het. But the women, children, livestock, and whatever else is in the city—all its spoil—you may take as plunder, and you shall use the spoil of your enemies that the LORD your God gives you.15So moet jy doen met al die stede wat baie ver van jou af is, wat nie van die stede van hierdie nasies hier is nie. This is how you are to treat all the cities that are far away from you and do not belong to the nations nearby.16Net van die stede van hierdie volke wat die HERE jou God vir jou as erfdeel gee, mag jy niks wat asem het laat lewe nie. However, in the cities of the nations that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, you must not leave alive anything that breathes.17Want jy moet hulle volkome met die ban vernietig, die Hetiete en die Amoriete, die Kanaäniete en die Feresiete, die Hewiete en die Jebusiete, soos die HERE jou God jou beveel het,כִּֽי־הַחֲרֵ֣ם תַּחֲרִימֵ֗ם הַחִתִּ֤י וְהָאֱמֹרִי֙ הַכְּנַעֲנִ֣י וְהַפְּרִזִּ֔י הַחִוִּ֖י וְהַיְבוּסִ֑י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוְּךָ֖ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֶֽיךָ׃For you must devote them to complete destruction —the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites—as the LORD your God has commanded you,18sodat hulle julle nie leer om te doen volgens al hulle gruwels wat hulle vir hulle gode gedoen het, en julle teen die HERE julle God sondig nie.לְמַ֗עַן אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹֽא־יְלַמְּד֤וּ אֶתְכֶם֙ לַעֲשׂ֔וֹת כְּכֹל֙ תּֽוֹעֲבֹתָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשׂ֖וּ לֵֽאלֹהֵיהֶ֑ם וַחֲטָאתֶ֖ם לַיהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵיכֶֽם׃ סso that they cannot teach you to do all the detestable things they do for their gods, and so cause you to sin against the LORD your God.
You must not cut them down. Are the trees of the field human, that you should besiege them?20Net die bome waarvan jy weet dat dit nie bome is wat voedsel gee nie, dié mag jy vernietig en afkap, en jy moet beleëringswerke bou teen die stad wat teen jou oorlog voer, totdat dit val. But you may destroy the trees that you know do not produce fruit.
