1Wanneer daar 'n regsaak tussen mense is en hulle na die reg kom en hulle oor hulle oordeel, en hulle die regverdige regverdig verklaar en die skuldige skuldig verklaar,כִּֽי־יִהְיֶ֥ה רִיב֙ בֵּ֣ין אֲנָשִׁ֔ים וְנִגְּשׁ֥וּ אֶל־הַמִּשְׁפָּ֖ט וּשְׁפָט֑וּם וְהִצְדִּ֨יקוּ֙ אֶת־הַצַּדִּ֔יק וְהִרְשִׁ֖יעוּ אֶת־הָרָשָֽׁע׃If there is a dispute between men, they are to go to court to be judged, so that the innocent may be acquitted and the guilty condemned.2dan, as die skuldige slae verdien, moet die rigter hom laat neerlê en hom voor hom laat slaan, na die maat van sy skuld, volgens getal.aLetterlik: as die skuldige 'n seun van slae is. If the guilty man deserves to be beaten, the judge shall have him lie down and be flogged in his presence with the number of lashes his crime warrants.3Veertig slae mag hy hom laat gee, nie meer nie, sodat hy nie voortgaan om hom bo dié baie slae te laat gee en jou broer voor jou oë verneder word nie. He may receive no more than forty lashes, lest your brother be beaten any more than that and be degraded in your sight.
4Jy mag 'n os nie muilband terwyl hy dors nie. Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.
When brothers dwell together and one of them dies without a son, the widow must not marry outside the family. Her husband’s brother is to take her as his wife and fulfill the duty of a brother-in-law for her.6En die eersgeborene wat sy baar, moet die naam van sy oorlede broer dra, sodat sy naam nie uit Israel uitgewis word nie.aLetterlik: moet opstaan op die naam van sy broer, die dode. The first son she bears will carry on the name of the dead brother, so that his name will not be blotted out from Israel.7Maar as die man nie sy skoonsuster wil neem nie, moet sy skoonsuster opgaan na die poort, na die ouderlinge, en sê: “My swaer weier om vir sy broer 'n naam in Israel op te rig; hy wil nie sy swaersplig teenoor my vervul nie.” But if the man does not want to marry his brother’s widow, she is to go to the elders at the city gate and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel. He is not willing to perform the duty of a brother-in-law for me.”8Dan moet die ouderlinge van sy stad hom roep en met hom praat. As hy bly staan en sê: “Ek wil haar nie neem nie,”וְקָֽרְאוּ־ל֥וֹ זִקְנֵי־עִיר֖וֹ וְדִבְּר֣וּ אֵלָ֑יו וְעָמַ֣ד וְאָמַ֔ר לֹ֥א חָפַ֖צְתִּי לְקַחְתָּֽהּ׃Then the elders of his city shall summon him and speak with him. If he persists and says, “I do not want to marry her,”9dan moet sy swaervrou voor die oë van die ouderlinge na hom toe kom en sy sandaal van sy voet af trek en in sy aangesig spoeg, en sy moet antwoord en sê: “So moet gedoen word aan die man wat nie die huis van sy broer bou nie.”וְנִגְּשָׁ֨ה יְבִמְתּ֣וֹ אֵלָיו֮ לְעֵינֵ֣י הַזְּקֵנִים֒ וְחָלְצָ֤ה נַעֲלוֹ֙ מֵעַ֣ל רַגְל֔וֹ וְיָרְקָ֖ה בְּפָנָ֑יו וְעָֽנְתָה֙ וְאָ֣מְרָ֔ה כָּ֚כָה יֵעָשֶׂ֣ה לָאִ֔ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־יִבְנֶ֖ה אֶת־בֵּ֥ית אָחִֽיוhis brother’s widow shall go up to him in the presence of the elders, remove his sandal, spit in his face, and declare, “This is what is done to the man who will not maintain his brother’s line.”10En sy naam sal in Israel genoem word: Die huis van die een wie se skoen afgetrek is.aLetterlik: Die huis van die skoen-afgetrekte. And his family name in Israel will be called “The House of the Unsandaled.”
