Περὶ δὲ ὧν ⸀ἐγράψατε, καλὸν ἀνθρώπῳ γυναικὸς μὴ ἅπτεσθαι·Now for the matters you wrote about: It is good to abstain from sexual relations.
2Maar vanweë die onsedelikhede moet elkeen sy eie vrou hê, en elke vrou moet haar eie man hê.διὰ δὲ τὰς πορνείας ἕκαστος τὴν ἑαυτοῦ γυναῖκα ἐχέτω, καὶ ἑκάστη τὸν ἴδιον ἄνδρα ἐχέτω.But because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. 3Die man moet aan die vrou gee wat hy haar verskuldig is, en net so ook die vrou aan die man.
aSommige manuskripte lees: die verskuldigde welwillendheid.
The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.
4Die vrou het nie gesag oor haar eie liggaam nie, maar die man; en net so het ook die man nie gesag oor sy eie liggaam nie, maar die vrou.ἡ γυνὴ τοῦ ἰδίου σώματος οὐκ ἐξουσιάζει ἀλλὰ ὁ ἀνήρ· ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ ὁ ἀνὴρ τοῦ ἰδίου σώματος οὐκ ἐξουσιάζει ἀλλὰ ἡ γυνή.The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife.
Do not deprive each other, except by mutual consent and for a time, so you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again, so that Satan will not tempt you through your lack of self-control.
6Maar dit sê ek as toegewing, nie as bevel nie.τοῦτο δὲ λέγω κατὰ συγγνώμην, οὐ κατʼ ἐπιταγήν.I say this as a concession, not as a command. 7Ek wens egter dat alle mense soos ek self is; maar elkeen het sy eie genadegawe van God, die een so, die ander so.θέλω ⸀δὲ πάντας ἀνθρώπους εἶναι ὡς καὶ ἐμαυτόν· ἀλλὰ ἕκαστος ἴδιον ⸂ἔχει χάρισμα⸃ ἐκ θεοῦ, ⸀ὁ μὲν οὕτως, ⸁ὁ δὲ οὕτως.I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.
8Maar ek sê vir die ongetroudes en die weduwees: dit is goed vir hulle as hulle bly soos ek ook.Λέγω δὲ τοῖς ἀγάμοις καὶ ταῖς χήραις, καλὸν ⸀αὐτοῖς ἐὰν μείνωσιν ὡς κἀγώ·Now to the unmarried and widows I say this: It is good for them to remain unmarried, as I am. 9Maar as hulle nie selfbeheersing het nie, moet hulle trou; want dit is beter om te trou as om te brand.εἰ δὲ οὐκ ἐγκρατεύονται, γαμησάτωσαν, κρεῖττον γάρ ἐστιν ⸀γαμῆσαι ἢ πυροῦσθαι.But if they cannot control themselves, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
10Aan die getroudes gee ek opdrag, nie ek nie, maar die Here, dat 'n vrou nie van haar man geskei moet word nie,Τοῖς δὲ γεγαμηκόσιν παραγγέλλω, οὐκ ἐγὼ ἀλλὰ ὁ κύριος, γυναῖκα ἀπὸ ἀνδρὸς μὴ χωρισθῆναι—To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband. 11maar as sy tog geskei is, moet sy ongetroud bly of met die man versoen word, en dat 'n man nie sy vrou moet verlaat nie.ἐὰν δὲ καὶ χωρισθῇ, μενέτω ἄγαμος ἢ τῷ ἀνδρὶ καταλλαγήτω— καὶ ἄνδρα γυναῖκα μὴ ἀφιέναι.But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.
12Maar aan die ander sê ek, nie die Here nie: as 'n broer 'n ongelowige vrou het, en sy instem om by hom te woon, moet hy haar nie verlaat nie.Τοῖς δὲ λοιποῖς ⸂λέγω ἐγώ⸃, οὐχ ὁ κύριος· εἴ τις ἀδελφὸς γυναῖκα ἔχει ἄπιστον, καὶ αὕτη συνευδοκεῖ οἰκεῖν μετʼ αὐτοῦ, μὴ ἀφιέτω αὐτήν·To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If a brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. 13En as 'n vrou 'n ongelowige man het, en hy instem om by haar te woon, moet sy die man nie verlaat nie.καὶ γυνὴ ⸂εἴ τις⸃ ἔχει ἄνδρα ἄπιστον, καὶ ⸀οὗτος συνευδοκεῖ οἰκεῖν μετʼ αὐτῆς, μὴ ἀφιέτω ⸂τὸν ἄνδρα⸃.And if a woman has an unbelieving husband and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him.
For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his believing wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.
aSommige manuskripte lees: julle.
But if the unbeliever leaves, let him go. The believing brother or sister is not bound in such cases. God has called you to live in peace.
16Want hoe weet jy, vrou, of jy jou man sal red? Of hoe weet jy, man, of jy jou vrou sal red?τί γὰρ οἶδας, γύναι, εἰ τὸν ἄνδρα σώσεις; ἢ τί οἶδας, ἄνερ, εἰ τὴν γυναῖκα σώσεις;How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?
Regardless, each one should lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him and to which God has called him. This is what I prescribe in all the churches.
18Is iemand as besnedene geroep? Hy moet dit nie ongedaan maak nie. Is iemand in onbesnedenheid geroep? Hy moet hom nie laat besny nie.
aLetterlik: Hy moet dit nie oortrek nie.
Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man still uncircumcised when called? He should not be circumcised.
19Die besnydenis is niks, en die onbesnedenheid is niks, maar die onderhouding van die gebooie van God.ἡ περιτομὴ οὐδέν ἐστιν, καὶ ἡ ἀκροβυστία οὐδέν ἐστιν, ἀλλὰ τήρησις ἐντολῶν θεοῦ.Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commandments is what counts. 20Elkeen moet bly in die roeping waarin hy geroep is.ἕκαστος ἐν τῇ κλήσει ᾗ ἐκλήθη ἐν ταύτῃ μενέτω.Each one should remain in the situation he was in when he was called. 21Is jy as slaaf geroep?
Were you a slave when you were called? Do not let it concern you—but if you can gain your freedom, take the opportunity.
22Want die slaaf wat in die Here geroep is, is 'n vrygelatene van die Here; net so is die vryman wat geroep is, 'n slaaf van Christus.ὁ γὰρ ἐν κυρίῳ κληθεὶς δοῦλος ἀπελεύθερος κυρίου ἐστίν· ⸀ὁμοίως ὁ ἐλεύθερος κληθεὶς δοῦλός ἐστιν Χριστοῦ.For he who was a slave when he was called by the Lord is the Lord’s freedman. Conversely, he who was a free man when he was called is Christ’s slave. 23Julle is teen 'n prys gekoop; moenie slawe van mense word nie.τιμῆς ἠγοράσθητε· μὴ γίνεσθε δοῦλοι ἀνθρώπων.You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. 24Waarin elkeen geroep is, broers en susters, daarin moet hy by God bly.ἕκαστος ἐν ᾧ ἐκλήθη, ἀδελφοί, ἐν τούτῳ μενέτω παρὰ θεῷ.Brothers, each one should remain in the situation he was in when God called him.
25Oor die maagde het ek geen bevel van die Here nie, maar ek gee my mening as iemand aan wie die Here barmhartigheid bewys het om getrou te wees.Περὶ δὲ τῶν παρθένων ἐπιταγὴν κυρίου οὐκ ἔχω, γνώμην δὲ δίδωμι ὡς ἠλεημένος ὑπὸ κυρίου πιστὸς εἶναι.Now about virgins, I have no command from the Lord, but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord’s mercy is trustworthy. 26Ek meen dus dat dit goed is vanweë die teenwoordige nood, dat dit goed is vir 'n mens om so te wees.νομίζω οὖν τοῦτο καλὸν ὑπάρχειν διὰ τὴν ἐνεστῶσαν ἀνάγκην, ὅτι καλὸν ἀνθρώπῳ τὸ οὕτως εἶναι.Because of the present crisis, I think it is good for a man to remain as he is. 27Is jy aan 'n vrou gebind? Moenie losmaking soek nie. Is jy van 'n vrou losgemaak? Moenie 'n vrou soek nie.δέδεσαι γυναικί; μὴ ζήτει λύσιν· λέλυσαι ἀπὸ γυναικός; μὴ ζήτει γυναῖκα·Are you committed to a wife? Do not seek to be released. Are you free of commitment? Do not look for a wife. But if you do marry, you have not sinned. And if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.
Voortaan moet ook dié wat vroue het, wees asof hulle nie het nie,τοῦτο δέ φημι, ἀδελφοί, ὁ καιρὸς συνεσταλμένος ⸂ἐστίν· τὸ λοιπὸν⸃ ἵνα καὶ οἱ ἔχοντες γυναῖκας ὡς μὴ ἔχοντες ὦσιν,What I am saying, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they had none; 30en dié wat huil, asof hulle nie huil nie, en dié wat bly is, asof hulle nie bly is nie, en dié wat koop, asof hulle nie besit nie,καὶ οἱ κλαίοντες ὡς μὴ κλαίοντες, καὶ οἱ χαίροντες ὡς μὴ χαίροντες, καὶ οἱ ἀγοράζοντες ὡς μὴ κατέχοντες,those who weep, as if they did not; those who are joyful, as if they were not; those who make a purchase, as if they had nothing; 31en dié wat die wêreld gebruik, asof hulle dit nie ten volle gebruik nie; want die gestalte van hierdie wêreld gaan verby.
aOf: asof hulle dit nie misbruik nie.
καὶ οἱ χρώμενοι ⸂τὸν κόσμον⸃ ὡς μὴ καταχρώμενοι· παράγει γὰρ τὸ σχῆμα τοῦ κόσμου τούτου.and those who use the things of this world, as if not dependent on them. For this world in its present form is passing away.
32Ek wil hê dat julle sonder sorge moet wees. Die ongetroude is besorg oor die dinge van die Here, hoe hy die Here kan behaag;Θέλω δὲ ὑμᾶς ἀμερίμνους εἶναι. ὁ ἄγαμος μεριμνᾷ τὰ τοῦ κυρίου, πῶς ⸀ἀρέσῃ τῷ κυρίῳ·I want you to be free from concern. The unmarried man is concerned about the work of the Lord, how he can please the Lord. 33maar hy wat getrou het, is bekommerd oor die dinge van die wêreld, hoe hy sy vrou kan behaag,ὁ δὲ γαμήσας μεριμνᾷ τὰ τοῦ κόσμου, πῶς ⸀ἀρέσῃ τῇ γυναικί,But the married man is concerned about the affairs of this world, how he can please his wife, 34en hy is verdeeld.
καὶ ἡ γυνὴ ⸂ἡ ἄγαμος⸃ καὶ ἡ ⸀παρθένος μεριμνᾷ τὰ τοῦ κυρίου, ἵνα ᾖ ἁγία καὶ ⸀τῷ σώματι καὶ ⸁τῷ πνεύματι· ἡ δὲ γαμήσασα μεριμνᾷ τὰ τοῦ κόσμου, πῶς ⸀ἀρέσῃ τῷ ἀνδρί.and his interests are divided. The unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the work of the Lord, how she can be holy in both body and spirit. But the married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world, how she can please her husband.
Here sonder afleiding.τοῦτο δὲ πρὸς τὸ ὑμῶν αὐτῶν ⸀σύμφορον λέγω, οὐχ ἵνα βρόχον ὑμῖν ἐπιβάλω, ἀλλὰ πρὸς τὸ εὔσχημον καὶ ⸀εὐπάρεδρον τῷ κυρίῳ ἀπερισπάστως.I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but in order to promote proper decorum and undivided devotion to the Lord.
However, if someone thinks he is acting inappropriately toward his betrothed, and if she is beyond her youth and they ought to marry, let him do as he wishes; he is not sinning; they should get married.
37Maar hy wat vas in sy hart staan, nie onder dwang nie, maar gesag het oor sy eie wil, en dit in sy eie hart besluit het, om sy maagd te bewaar, sal goed doen.ὃς δὲ ἕστηκεν ⸂ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ αὐτοῦ ἑδραῖος⸃ μὴ ἔχων ἀνάγκην, ἐξουσίαν δὲ ἔχει περὶ τοῦ ἰδίου θελήματος, καὶ τοῦτο κέκρικεν ἐν τῇ ⸂ἰδίᾳ καρδίᾳ⸃, ⸀τηρεῖν τὴν ἑαυτοῦ παρθένον, καλῶς ⸀ποιήσει·But the man who is firmly established in his heart and under no constraint, with control over his will and resolve in his heart not to marry the virgin, he will do well.
So then, he who marries the virgin does well, but he who does not marry her does even better.
Γυνὴ ⸀δέδεται ἐφʼ ὅσον χρόνον ζῇ ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτῆς· ἐὰν ⸀δὲ κοιμηθῇ ὁ ἀνήρ, ἐλευθέρα ἐστὶν ᾧ θέλει γαμηθῆναι, μόνον ἐν κυρίῳ·A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, as long as he belongs to the Lord.
40Maar sy is gelukkiger as sy so bly, volgens my mening; en ek meen dat ek ook die Gees van God het.μακαριωτέρα δέ ἐστιν ἐὰν οὕτως μείνῃ, κατὰ τὴν ἐμὴν γνώμην, δοκῶ ⸀δὲ κἀγὼ πνεῦμα θεοῦ ἔχειν.In my judgment, however, she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I too have the Spirit of God.
