Once we were safely ashore, we learned that the island was called Malta.
2En die barbare het ons nie gewone menslikheid betoon nie, want hulle het ’n vuur aangesteek en ons almal aanvaar, ter wille van die reën wat aan die kom was en ter wille van die koue.οἵ ⸀τε βάρβαροι παρεῖχον οὐ τὴν τυχοῦσαν φιλανθρωπίαν ἡμῖν, ⸀ἅψαντες γὰρ πυρὰν προσελάβοντο πάντας ἡμᾶς διὰ τὸν ὑετὸν τὸν ἐφεστῶτα καὶ διὰ τὸ ψῦχος.The islanders showed us extraordinary kindness. They kindled a fire and welcomed all of us because it was raining and cold. Paul gathered a bundle of sticks, and as he laid them on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself to his hand. 4En toe die barbare die dier aan sy hand sien hang, het hulle onder mekaar gesê: “Hierdie mens is beslis ’n moordenaar; al het hy uit die see veilig deurgekom, het die Geregtigheid hom nie toegelaat om te lewe nie.”ὡς δὲ εἶδον οἱ βάρβαροι κρεμάμενον τὸ θηρίον ἐκ τῆς χειρὸς αὐτοῦ, ⸂πρὸς ἀλλήλους ἔλεγον⸃· Πάντως φονεύς ἐστιν ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος ὃν διασωθέντα ἐκ τῆς θαλάσσης ἡ δίκη ζῆν οὐκ εἴασεν.When the islanders saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another, “Surely this man is a murderer. Although he was saved from the sea, Justice has not allowed him to live.” 5Hy het dan die dier in die vuur afgeskud en geen kwaad gely nie;ὁ μὲν οὖν ἀποτινάξας τὸ θηρίον εἰς τὸ πῦρ ἔπαθεν οὐδὲν κακόν·But Paul shook the creature off into the fire and suffered no ill effects. ἐπὶ πολὺ δὲ αὐτῶν προσδοκώντων καὶ θεωρούντων μηδὲν ἄτοπον εἰς αὐτὸν γινόμενον, ⸀μεταβαλόμενοι ἔλεγον ⸂αὐτὸν εἶναι θεόν⸃.The islanders were expecting him to swell up or suddenly drop dead. But after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.
Nearby stood an estate belonging to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us and entertained us hospitably for three days.
The father of Publius was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him, and after praying and placing his hands on him, he healed the man. 9Nadat dit gebeur het, het ook die ander op die eiland wat siektes gehad het, gekom en is hulle genees;τούτου ⸀δὲ γενομένου καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ οἱ ⸂ἐν τῇ νήσῳ ἔχοντες ἀσθενείας⸃ προσήρχοντο καὶ ἐθεραπεύοντο,After this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured as well. 10hulle het ons ook met baie eerbewyse vereer, en toe ons wegvaar, het hulle aan boord gesit wat ons nodig gehad het.οἳ καὶ πολλαῖς τιμαῖς ἐτίμησαν ἡμᾶς καὶ ἀναγομένοις ἐπέθεντο τὰ πρὸς ⸂τὰς χρείας⸃.The islanders honored us in many ways and supplied our needs when we were ready to sail.
11En ná drie maande het ons uitgevaar in ’n Aleksandrynse skip wat op die eiland oorwinter het, met die Dioskure as kenteken.Μετὰ δὲ τρεῖς μῆνας ⸀ἀνήχθημεν ἐν πλοίῳ παρακεχειμακότι ἐν τῇ νήσῳ Ἀλεξανδρίνῳ, παρασήμῳ Διοσκούροις.After three months we set sail in an Alexandrian ship that had wintered in the island. It had the Twin Brothers as a figurehead. 12Nadat ons by Sirakuse aangeland het, het ons drie dae daar gebly,καὶ καταχθέντες εἰς Συρακούσας ἐπεμείναμεν ἡμέρας τρεῖς,Putting in at Syracuse, we stayed there three days.
καὶ μετὰ μίαν ἡμέραν ἐπιγενομένου νότου δευτεραῖοι ἤλθομεν εἰς Ποτιόλους,From there we weighed anchor and came to Rhegium. After one day, a south wind came up, and on the second day we arrived at Puteoli.
14waar ons broers en susters gevind het en versoek is om sewe dae by hulle te bly; en so het ons na Rome gekom.οὗ εὑρόντες ἀδελφοὺς παρεκλήθημεν ⸀παρʼ αὐτοῖς ἐπιμεῖναι ἡμέρας ἑπτά· καὶ οὕτως εἰς τὴν Ῥώμην ἤλθαμεν.There we found some brothers who invited us to spend the week with them. And so we came to Rome. 15Van daar het die broers en susters, toe hulle van ons gehoor het, ons tegemoetgekom tot by die Forum van Appius en Drie Herberge; en toe Paulus hulle sien, het hy God gedank en moed geskep.κἀκεῖθεν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ ἀκούσαντες τὰ περὶ ἡμῶν ⸀ἦλθαν εἰς ἀπάντησιν ἡμῖν ἄχρι Ἀππίου Φόρου καὶ Τριῶν Ταβερνῶν, οὓς ἰδὼν ὁ Παῦλος εὐχαριστήσας τῷ θεῷ ἔλαβε θάρσος.The brothers there had heard about us and traveled as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns to meet us. When Paul saw them, he was encouraged and gave thanks to God.
When we arrived in Rome, Paul was permitted to stay by himself, with a soldier to guard him.
Toe hulle saamgekom het, het hy vir hulle gesê: “Manne, broers, ek is, hoewel ek niks teen die volk of die gebruike van die vaders gedoen het nie, as gevangene uit Jerusalem oorgelewer in die hande van die Romeine,Ἐγένετο δὲ μετὰ ἡμέρας τρεῖς συγκαλέσασθαι ⸀αὐτὸν τοὺς ὄντας τῶν Ἰουδαίων πρώτους· συνελθόντων δὲ αὐτῶν ἔλεγεν πρὸς αὐτούς· ⸂Ἐγώ, ἄνδρες ἀδελφοί⸃, οὐδὲν ἐναντίον ποιήσας τῷ λαῷ ἢ τοῖς ἔθεσι τοῖς πατρῴοις δέσμιος ἐξ Ἱεροσολύμων παρεδόθην εἰς τὰς χεῖρας τῶν Ῥωμαίων,After three days, he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered, he said to them, “Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, I was taken prisoner in Jerusalem and handed over to the Romans. 18wat my ondervra het en my wou vrylaat omdat daar geen grond vir die dood in my was nie;οἵτινες ἀνακρίναντές με ἐβούλοντο ἀπολῦσαι διὰ τὸ μηδεμίαν αἰτίαν θανάτου ὑπάρχειν ἐν ἐμοί·They examined me and wanted to release me, because there was no basis for a death sentence against me. 19maar omdat die Jode teengespreek het, was ek verplig om op die keiser ’n beroep te doen, nie asof ek iets het om my nasie van te beskuldig nie.ἀντιλεγόντων δὲ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἠναγκάσθην ἐπικαλέσασθαι Καίσαρα, οὐχ ὡς τοῦ ἔθνους μου ἔχων τι ⸀κατηγορεῖν.But when the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, even though I have no charge to bring against my nation. 20Om hierdie rede dan het ek julle ontbied om julle te sien en met julle te praat, want ter wille van die hoop van Israel dra ek hierdie ketting.διὰ ταύτην οὖν τὴν αἰτίαν παρεκάλεσα ὑμᾶς ἰδεῖν καὶ προσλαλῆσαι, ἕνεκεν γὰρ τῆς ἐλπίδος τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ τὴν ἅλυσιν ταύτην περίκειμαι.So for this reason I have called to see you and speak with you. It is because of the hope of Israel that I am bound with this chain.” 21En hulle het vir hom gesê: “Ons het nóg briewe oor jou uit Judea ontvang, nóg het iemand van die broers wat gekom het, iets slegs oor jou berig of gesê.οἱ δὲ πρὸς αὐτὸν εἶπαν· Ἡμεῖς οὔτε γράμματα περὶ σοῦ ἐδεξάμεθα ἀπὸ τῆς Ἰουδαίας, οὔτε παραγενόμενός τις τῶν ἀδελφῶν ἀπήγγειλεν ἢ ἐλάλησέν τι περὶ σοῦ πονηρόν.The leaders replied, “We have not received any letters about you from Judea, nor have any of the brothers from there reported or even mentioned anything bad about you. 22Maar ons ag dit goed om van jou te hoor wat jy dink, want wat hierdie sekte betref, is dit aan ons bekend dat dit oral teengespreek word.”ἀξιοῦμεν δὲ παρὰ σοῦ ἀκοῦσαι ἃ φρονεῖς, περὶ μὲν γὰρ τῆς αἱρέσεως ταύτης γνωστὸν ⸂ἡμῖν ἐστιν⸃ ὅτι πανταχοῦ ἀντιλέγεται.But we consider your views worth hearing, because we know that people everywhere are speaking against this sect.”
23Nadat hulle 'n dag met hom afgespreek het, het nog meer van hulle na hom in sy verblyf gekom; aan hulle het hy dit uiteengesit, terwyl hy die koninkryk van God ernstig betuig en hulle oor Jesus probeer oortuig het, uit die wet van Moses sowel as uit die profete, van die oggend tot die aand.Ταξάμενοι δὲ αὐτῷ ἡμέραν ⸀ἧκον πρὸς αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν ξενίαν πλείονες, οἷς ἐξετίθετο διαμαρτυρόμενος τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ πείθων τε ⸀αὐτοὺς περὶ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ ἀπό τε τοῦ νόμου Μωϋσέως καὶ τῶν προφητῶν ἀπὸ πρωῒ ἕως ἑσπέρας.So they set a day to meet with Paul, and many people came to the place he was staying. He expounded to them from morning to evening, testifying about the kingdom of God and persuading them about Jesus from the Law of Moses and the Prophets. 24En sommige is oortuig deur wat gesê is, maar ander het nie geglo nie,καὶ οἱ μὲν ἐπείθοντο τοῖς λεγομένοις οἱ δὲ ἠπίστουν,Some of them were convinced by what he said, but others refused to believe.
ἀσύμφωνοι δὲ ὄντες πρὸς ἀλλήλους ἀπελύοντο, εἰπόντος τοῦ Παύλου ῥῆμα ἓν ὅτι Καλῶς τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον ἐλάλησεν διὰ Ἠσαΐου τοῦ προφήτου πρὸς τοὺς πατέρας ⸀ὑμῶνThey disagreed among themselves and began to leave after Paul had made this final statement: “The Holy Spirit was right when He spoke to your fathers through Isaiah the prophet:
26en gesê: ‘Gaan na hierdie volk en sê: “Deur te hoor sal julle hoor en geensins verstaan nie, en deur te kyk sal julle kyk en geensins sien nie;
aAanhaling uit Jesaja 6:9–10.
⸀λέγων· Πορεύθητι πρὸς τὸν λαὸν τοῦτον καὶ εἰπόν· Ἀκοῇ ἀκούσετε καὶ οὐ μὴ συνῆτε, καὶ βλέποντες βλέψετε καὶ οὐ μὴ ἴδητε·‘Go to this people and say, “You will be ever hearing but never understanding; you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.”
For this people’s heart has grown callous; they hardly hear with their ears, and they have closed their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn, and I would heal them.’ 28Laat dit dan aan julle bekend wees dat hierdie redding van God na die heidene gestuur is; hulle sal ook luister.”γνωστὸν οὖν ⸂ἔστω ὑμῖν⸃ ὅτι τοῖς ἔθνεσιν ἀπεστάλη ⸀τοῦτο τὸ σωτήριον τοῦ θεοῦ· αὐτοὶ καὶ ⸀ἀκούσονται.Be advised, therefore, that God’s salvation has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will listen!” 29Hierdie vers kom nie in die grondteks voor nie.
30Hy het twee volle jare in sy eie gehuurde woning gebly en almal ontvang wat na hom gekom het,⸀Ἐνέμεινεν ⸀δὲ διετίαν ὅλην ἐν ἰδίῳ μισθώματι, καὶ ἀπεδέχετο πάντας τοὺς εἰσπορευομένους πρὸς αὐτόν,Paul stayed there two full years in his own rented house, welcoming all who came to visit him. 31en die koninkryk van God verkondig en die dinge aangaande die Here Jesus Christus geleer, met alle vrymoedigheid, ongehinderd.κηρύσσων τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ διδάσκων τὰ περὶ τοῦ κυρίου Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μετὰ πάσης παρρησίας ἀκωλύτως.Boldly and freely he proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ.
