Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor; he was the son of a prostitute, and Gilead was his father.2En die vrou van Gilead het vir hom seuns gebaar; en toe die seuns van die vrou groot geword het, het hulle Jefta weggejaag en vir hom gesê: “Jy sal nie in die huis van ons vader erf nie, want jy is die seun van 'n ander vrou.” And Gilead’s wife bore him sons who grew up, drove Jephthah out, and said to him, “You shall have no inheritance in our father’s house, because you are the son of another woman.”3Toe het Jefta gevlug van sy broers af en in die land Tob gaan woon. So Jephthah fled from his brothers and settled in the land of Tob, where worthless men gathered around him and traveled with him.
Some time later, when the Ammonites fought against Israel5En toe die Ammoniete teen Israel oorlog gevoer het, het die ouderlinge van Gilead gegaan om Jefta uit die land Tob te gaan haal.וַיְהִ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁר־נִלְחֲמ֥וּ בְנֵֽי־עַמּ֖וֹן עִם־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ זִקְנֵ֣י גִלְעָ֔ד לָקַ֥חַת אֶת־יִפְתָּ֖ח מֵאֶ֥רֶץ טֽוֹב׃and made war with them, the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.6En hulle het vir Jefta gesê: “Kom en wees vir ons 'n aanvoerder, dat ons teen die Ammoniete kan veg.”וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לְיִפְתָּ֔ח לְכָ֕ה וְהָיִ֥יתָה לָּ֖נוּ לְקָצִ֑ין וְנִֽלָּחֲמָ֖ה בִּבְנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃“Come,” they said, “be our commander, so that we can fight against the Ammonites.”7Maar Jefta het vir die ouderlinge van Gilead gesê: “Was dit nie julle wat my gehaat en my uit die huis van my vader weggejaag het nie? Hoekom kom julle nou na my toe, nou dat julle in nood is?” Jephthah replied to the elders of Gilead, “Did you not hate me and expel me from my father’s house? Why then have you come to me now, when you are in distress?”8En die ouderlinge van Gilead het vir Jefta gesê: “Daarom het ons nou na jou toe teruggekeer, dat jy met ons saamgaan en teen die Ammoniete veg; en jy sal vir ons hoof wees oor al die inwoners van Gilead.” They answered Jephthah, “This is why we now turn to you, that you may go with us, fight the Ammonites, and become leader over all of us who live in Gilead.”9En Jefta het vir die ouderlinge van Gilead gesê: “As julle my laat terugkeer om teen die Ammoniete te veg, en die HERE hulle aan my oorgee, sal ek vir julle hoof wees.”aLetterlik: hulle voor my gee. But Jephthah asked them, “If you take me back to fight the Ammonites and the LORD gives them to me, will I really be your leader?”10Die ouderlinge van Gilead het vir Jefta gesê: “Die HERE sal hoorder wees tussen ons: as ons nie volgens jou woord so doen nie!”aOf: Die HERE is hoorder tussen ons; ons sal beslis volgens jou woord doen. And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, “The LORD is our witness if we do not do as you say.”11Toe het Jefta met die ouderlinge van Gilead saamgegaan, en die volk het hom oor hulle as hoof en aanvoerder aangestel; en Jefta het al sy woorde voor die aangesig van die HERE in Mispa gespreek. So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him their leader and commander. And Jephthah repeated all his terms in the presence of the LORD at Mizpah.
Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites, saying, “What do you have against me that you have come to fight against my land?”13En die koning van die Ammoniete het vir die boodskappers van Jefta gesê: “Omdat Israel my land geneem het toe hy uit Egipte opgetrek het, van die Arnon af tot by die Jabbok en tot by die Jordaan. Gee dit dan nou in vrede terug.” The king of the Ammonites answered Jephthah’s messengers, “When Israel came up out of Egypt, they seized my land, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and all the way to the Jordan. Now, therefore, restore it peaceably.”14En Jefta het weer boodskappers na die koning van die Ammoniete gestuur,וַיּ֥וֹסֶף ע֖וֹד יִפְתָּ֑ח וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ מַלְאָכִ֔ים אֶל־מֶ֖לֶךְ בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites15en vir hom gesê: “So sê Jefta: Israel het nie die land van Moab en die land van die Ammoniete geneem nie.וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ כֹּ֖ה אָמַ֣ר יִפְתָּ֑ח לֹֽא־לָקַ֤ח יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶת־אֶ֣רֶץ מוֹאָ֔ב וְאֶת־אֶ֖רֶץ בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן׃to tell him, “This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take away the land of Moab or of the Ammonites.16Want toe hulle uit Egipte opgetrek het, het Israel deur die woestyn getrek tot by die Rietsee en by Kades gekom. But when Israel came up out of Egypt, they traveled through the wilderness to the Red Sea and came to Kadesh.17En Israel het boodskappers na die koning van Edom gestuur om te sê: ‘Laat my tog deur jou land trek.’ So het Israel in Kades gebly. Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let us pass through your land,’ but the king of Edom would not listen. They also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. Then Israel traveled through the wilderness and bypassed the lands of Edom and Moab. They came to the east side of the land of Moab and camped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the territory of Moab, since the Arnon was its border.19En Israel het boodskappers na Sihon, die koning van die Amoriete, die koning van Hesbon, gestuur; en Israel het vir hom gesê: ‘Laat ons tog deur jou land trek tot by my plek.’ And Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, who ruled in Heshbon, and said to him, ‘Please let us pass through your land into our own place.’20Maar Sihon het Israel nie vertrou om deur sy gebied te trek nie. But Sihon would not trust Israel to pass through his territory. So he gathered all his people, encamped in Jahaz, and fought with Israel.21En die HERE, die God van Israel, het Sihon en al sy volk in die hand van Israel gegee, en hulle het hulle verslaan; en Israel het die hele land van die Amoriete, die inwoners van daardie land, in besit geneem. Then the LORD, the God of Israel, delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, who defeated them. Then the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, then through Mizpah of Gilead. So the Ammonites were subdued before the Israelites.
34En toe Jefta by Mispa by sy huis kom, kyk, daar kom sy dogter uit hom tegemoet met tamboeryne en koordanse; en sy alleen was 'n enigste kind; hy het buiten haar geen seun of dogter gehad nie.aLetterlik: hy het nie van hom seun of dogter gehad nie. And when Jephthah returned home to Mizpah, there was his daughter coming out to meet him with tambourines and dancing!
