Then the LORD said to Abram, “Leave your country, your kindred, and your father’s household, and go to the land I will show you.2En Ek sal jou ’n groot nasie maak en Ek sal jou seën en jou naam groot maak; en wees ’n seën.aOf: sodat jy ’n seën sal wees. I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.3En Ek sal seën dié wat jou seën, en wie jou vloek, sal Ek vervloek; en in jou sal al die geslagte van die aarde geseën word.”aOf: sal al die geslagte van die aarde hulleself seën. I will bless those who bless you and curse those who curse you; and all the families of the earth will be blessed through you. So Abram departed, as the LORD had directed him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left Haran.5En Abram het Sarai, sy vrou, en Lot, sy broer se seun, geneem, en al hulle besittings wat hulle verwerf het, en die mense wat hulle in Haran verkry het; en hulle het uitgetrek om na die land Kanaän te gaan, en hulle het in die land Kanaän aangekom.aLetterlik: die siele wat hulle in Haran gemaak het. And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the possessions and people they had acquired in Haran, and set out for the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan,6En Abram het deur die land getrek tot by die plek Sigem, tot by die terebint van More. Abram traveled through the land as far as the site of the Oak of Moreh at Shechem. And at that time the Canaanites were in the land.7En die HERE het aan Abram verskyn en gesê: “Aan jou nageslag sal Ek hierdie land gee.” Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, “I will give this land to your offspring. ” So Abram built an altar there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.8En hy het daarvandaan verder getrek na die bergland oos van Bet-El en sy tent opgeslaan, met Bet-El aan die weste en Ai aan die ooste; en hy het daar ’n altaar vir die HERE gebou en die naam van die HERE aangeroep. From there Abram moved on to the hill country east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel to the west and Ai to the east. There he built an altar to the LORD, and he called on the name of the LORD.9En Abram het verder getrek, al verder en verder na die Negev toe.aOf: na die suide toe. And Abram journeyed on toward the Negev.
Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.11En toe hy naby was om Egipte binne te gaan, het hy vir Sarai, sy vrou, gesê: “Kyk tog, ek weet dat jy ’n vrou is wat mooi van voorkoms is. As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “Look, I know that you are a beautiful woman,12En wanneer die Egiptenaars jou sien, sal hulle sê: ‘Dit is sy vrou,’ en hulle sal my doodmaak en jou laat lewe.וְהָיָ֗ה כִּֽי־יִרְא֤וּ אֹתָךְ֙ הַמִּצְרִ֔ים וְאָמְר֖וּ אִשְׁתּ֣וֹ זֹ֑את וְהָרְג֥וּ אֹתִ֖י וְאֹתָ֥ךְ יְחַיּֽוּ׃and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live.13Sê tog dat jy my suster is, sodat dit met my goed sal gaan om jou ontwil en my lewe ter wille van jou behoue sal bly.”aLetterlik: en my siel sal lewe ter wille van jou. Please say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake, and on account of you my life will be spared.”14En toe Abram in Egipte aankom, het die Egiptenaars die vrou gesien, dat sy baie mooi was. So when Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.15En die owerstes van Farao het haar gesien en haar by Farao geprys; en die vrou is in Farao se huis geneem. When Pharaoh’s officials saw Sarai, they commended her to him, and she was taken into the palace of Pharaoh.16En hy het aan Abram goed gedoen om haar ontwil, en hy het kleinvee en beeste en esels en slawe en slavinne en eselinne en kamele gekry. He treated Abram well on her account, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, menservants and maidservants, and camels.17Maar die HERE het Farao en sy huis met groot plae getref vanweë Sarai, Abram se vrou.aLetterlik: oor die saak van Sarai. The LORD, however, afflicted Pharaoh and his household with severe plagues because of Abram’s wife Sarai.18En Farao het Abram geroep en gesê: “Wat is dit wat jy my aangedoen het? So Pharaoh summoned Abram and asked, “What have you done to me? Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?19Waarom het jy gesê: ‘Sy is my suster,’ en ek het haar vir my as vrou geneem? En nou, hier is jou vrou; neem haar en gaan.” Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’ so that I took her as my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!”20En Farao het manne aangaande hom bevel gegee, en hulle het hom en sy vrou en alles wat hy gehad het, weggestuur. Then Pharaoh gave his men orders concerning Abram, and they sent him away with his wife and all his possessions.
