Now Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming toward him with four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants.2Hy het die slavinne en hulle kinders voor geplaas, en Lea en haar kinders agter hulle, en Ragel en Josef heel agter. He put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph at the rear.3Maar hy self het voor hulle uit gegaan en sewe keer tot op die grond neergebuig totdat hy naby sy broer gekom het. But Jacob himself went on ahead and bowed to the ground seven times as he approached his brother.4Esau het hom tegemoet gehardloop en hom omhels en om sy nek geval en hom gesoen, en hulle het gehuil. Esau, however, ran to him and embraced him, threw his arms around his neck, and kissed him. When Esau looked up and saw the women and children, he asked, “Who are these with you?” Jacob answered, “These are the children God has graciously given your servant.”6Toe het die slavinne nader gekom, hulle en hulle kinders, en hulle het neergebuig. Then the maidservants and their children approached and bowed down.7Ook Lea en haar kinders het nader gekom en neergebuig, en daarna het Josef en Ragel nader gekom en neergebuig. Leah and her children also approached and bowed down, and then Joseph and Rachel approached and bowed down.8Toe het hy gesê: “Wat beteken hierdie hele kamp vir jou wat ek teëgekom het?” וַיֹּ֕אמֶר מִ֥י לְךָ֛ כָּל־הַמַּחֲנֶ֥ה הַזֶּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר פָּגָ֑שְׁתִּי וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לִמְצֹא־חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֵ֥י אֲדֹנִֽי׃“What do you mean by sending this whole company to meet me?” asked Esau. “To find favor in your sight, my lord,” Jacob answered.9Toe het Esau gesê: “Ek het baie, my broer; laat vir jou wees wat joune is.”וַיֹּ֥אמֶר עֵשָׂ֖ו יֶשׁ־לִ֣י רָ֑ב אָחִ֕י יְהִ֥י לְךָ֖ אֲשֶׁר־לָֽךְ׃“I already have plenty, my brother,” Esau replied. “Keep what belongs to you.”10Jakob sê: “Nee, asseblief! As ek dan guns in u oë gevind het, neem my geskenk uit my hand aan; want daarom het ek u aangesig gesien soos 'n mens die aangesig van God sien, en u het my goedgunstig ontvang.aOf: want ek het immers u aangesig gesienוַיֹּ֣אמֶר יַעֲקֹ֗ב אַל־נָא֙ אִם־נָ֨א מָצָ֤אתִי חֵן֙ בְּעֵינֶ֔יךָ וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ מִנְחָתִ֖י מִיָּדִ֑י כִּ֣י עַל־כֵּ֞ן רָאִ֣יתִי פָנֶ֗יךָ כִּרְאֹ֛ת פְּנֵ֥י אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַתִּרְצֵֽנִי׃But Jacob insisted, “No, please! If I have found favor in your sight, then receive this gift from my hand. For indeed, I have seen your face, and it is like seeing the face of God, since you have received me favorably.11Neem tog my seën wat vir jou gebring is, want God was my genadig, en ek het alles. Please accept my gift that was brought to you, because God has been gracious to me and I have all I need.” So Jacob pressed him until he accepted.12Toe het hy gesê: “Laat ons wegtrek en gaan, en ek sal voor jou uit gaan.”aOf: ek sal langs jou gaan. Then Esau said, “Let us be on our way, and I will go ahead of you.”13Maar Jakob sê vir hom: “My heer weet dat die kinders teer is, en die kleinvee en die beeste wat soog, is onder my sorg. As hulle hulle een dag oorjaag, sal al die kleinvee doodgaan.aLetterlik: is op myוַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו אֲדֹנִ֤י יֹדֵ֨עַ֙ כִּֽי־הַיְלָדִ֣ים רַכִּ֔ים וְהַצֹּ֥אן וְהַבָּקָ֖ר עָל֣וֹת עָלָ֑י וּדְפָקוּם֙ י֣וֹם אֶחָ֔ד וָמֵ֖תוּ כָּל־הַצֹּֽאן׃But Jacob replied, “My lord knows that the children are frail, and I must care for sheep and cattle that are nursing their young. If they are driven hard for even a day, all the animals will die.14Laat my heer tog voor sy dienaar uit aangaan, en ek sal stadig voortbeweeg in die tempo van die vee wat voor my is en in die tempo van die kinders, totdat ek by my heer in Seïr kom.”aLetterlik: volgens die voet van die werk wat voor my is, en volgens die voet van die kinders. Please let my lord go ahead of his servant. I will continue on slowly, at a comfortable pace for the livestock and children, until I come to my lord at Seir.”15Toe het Esau gesê: “Laat ek tog van die mense wat by my is, by jou laat bly.” Maar hy het gesê: “Waarom dit? Laat ek guns vind in die oë van my heer.”וַיֹּ֣אמֶר עֵשָׂ֔ו אַצִּֽיגָה־נָּ֣א עִמְּךָ֔ מִן־הָעָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתִּ֑י וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לָ֣מָּה זֶּ֔ה אֶמְצָא־חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֵ֥י אֲדֹנִֽי׃“Let me leave some of my people with you,” Esau said. But Jacob replied, “Why do that? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord.”
So that day Esau started on his way back to Seir,17En Jakob het na Sukkot getrek en vir hom 'n huis gebou en vir sy vee hutte gemaak. וְיַעֲקֹב֙ נָסַ֣ע סֻכֹּ֔תָה וַיִּ֥בֶן ל֖וֹ בָּ֑יִת וּלְמִקְנֵ֨הוּ֙ עָשָׂ֣ה סֻכֹּ֔ת עַל־כֵּ֛ן קָרָ֥א שֵׁם־הַמָּק֖וֹם סֻכּֽוֹת׃ סbut Jacob went on to Succoth, where he built a house for himself and shelters for his livestock; that is why the place was called Succoth.
After Jacob had come from Paddan-aram, he arrived safely at the city of Shechem in the land of Canaan, and he camped just outside the city.19Hy het die stuk veld waar hy sy tent opgeslaan het, gekoop uit die hand van die seuns van Hamor, die vader van Sigem, vir 100 kesita. And the plot of ground where he pitched his tent, he purchased from the sons of Hamor, Shechem’s father, for a hundred pieces of silver.20Daar het hy 'n altaar opgerig en dit El-Elohe-Israel genoem.aDie naam beteken God, die God van Israel. There he set up an altar and called it El-Elohe-Israel.
